Fret-King Fret King STVDIO Series Corona 60 SP3 Coral Red Distressed

Fret-King STVDIO Series Corona 60 SP3 Coral Red Distressed

Here we have another one-off by guitar guru Trev Wilkinson. Built in his Stockport workshop, this special custom guitar features 3 Fret-king Alnico V P90 style pickups, Wilkinson VSV bridge, Gotoh machine heads and a one-piece maple neck on an American alder body. Finished in a distressed coral red finish to give it a look and feel of a 50 year old guitar!

About the Stvdio Series Corona 60 SP3:

In the Fret-King workshop – an airy, vibrant and atmospheric atelier in an elegant Victorian workshop in the genteel seaside town of Southport on England’s North West coast – Trev Wilkinson, working with Mike Smith, his master builder of many years’ experience, craft the occasional extra special, unique Fret-King STVDIO or ATELIER Series guitar to show what can be done when the creative process is allowed to break free of the bounds of conformity.

Beyond even the excellence of UK-built Fret-King Green Label guitars, these unique styling exercises are exotic one-off creations and can be many things; stunning custom finishes, a particular combination of esoteric specifications or materials, rare and beautiful tone woods, an embellishment of precious metal, an experimental pickup configuration or switching, a new take on a body shape... But whatever, while hovering between the boundaries of master-built musical instruments, exclusive luxury goods, and art, Fret-King STVDIO and Atelier Series guitars are the embodiment of Trev Wilkinson’s imagination, and showcase the capabilities of the Fret-King styling studio, with each creation being an awe-inspiring and highly desirable object of beauty.

No Fret-King STVDIO Series guitar will ever be repeated exactly and the discerning few who will own one will possess a peerless and very collectible player’s guitar.

All Fret-King STVDIO and Atelier Series guitars come with a UK made Hiscox "Lite-Flite" ABS Flight case.

Notes from Trev Wilkinson

Fret-King STVDIO is all about the question of 'what if?’. In the early 60s, virtually no one would attempt to try different pickup designs or control layouts. STVDIO Series is where we experiment a little and try things that maybe were not actually made, but could have been if someone had thought about it!

This Fret-King 60 SP3 is a lightly distressed Corona in Coral Red, with a maple/rosewood neck featuring a shallow C neck profile. It makes it feel like it's been played for the last 50 years, and once you pick it up, you'll find it extremely hard to put down!

Standard P90-style pickups are single coils, but here two alnico bar magnets give that fat sound we all love - but it's not the same as a humbucker. So, bearing in mind that the traditional double-cut bolt-on guitar has single coils too but with a completely different voicing, we decided to do some of our fabled experimenting...

Taking our calibrated P90 coils but substituting the normal alnico bar magnets for alnico V slug polepieces, we've imbued this guitar with all the focused single coil highs that are familiar, yet it's also got a slightly fuller voicing and some extra power to drive effects or the front end of your amp.

Backing off the volume will instantly transport you to the usual three single coils sounds. Hearing is believing, and everyone who's played this one has been amazed at its response and character.

Looking closely at these special pickups reveals the back coil to have flat polepieces, whereas the middle and front have staggered. We reckon this gives the best sound, and it also means the back pickup does not get lost in the mix when selected on its own for that all important solo!

That all said, great sound means nothing if the guitar won't work for you on stage. That's why, as with all Fret-King Green Label and Stvdio guitars, the FKS2216 has the best performing hardware available anywhere, including self-locking, height-adjustable tuners and a Wilkinson VSV high performance vibrato system, giving unrivalled tuning stability no matter what style of music you play.

Only the buyer will ever own this guitar, it’s unique!
