In 1994, Guitarras Manuel Rodriguez left its small shop in the centre of Madrid to install itself in new and ambitious facilities in Esquivias, Toledo, where they would begin to manufacture their guitars. More than two decades later, our factory is an example of perfect symbiosis between tradition and modernity. It is a place where the latest technology meets our luthiers' experience to create an unrivalled sound and we do not want it to be missed out on. At Manuel Rodriguez we believe that the best way to find out which guitar is ideal for each person is by discovering it, playing it, feeling it. That is why we offer you a guided tour of our factory, observing the whole construction process, from the drying of the most exotic woods to varnishing and polishing. On this journey to the essence of the guitar, the visitor can see and listen to our luthiers at work, and look closely at every detail of this instrument. In addition, you can delve into the luthiers' world of the last century, thanks to the opportunity to see Manuel Rodriguez Sr.'s old workshop, its almost hundred year old woods and its instruments.
FOUNDATION The history of MR can only be understood as a long journey of more than one hundred years that has allowed a family to create half a million guitars. It was 1905 when Manuel Rodriguez Perez began working as a luthier.
SECOND GENERATION The Civil War forced the family to flee Spain temporarily. However, when they returned, both the founder and his son, the young Manuel Rodriguez, continued building guitars.
ARRIVAL IN THE USA In 1959 the Rodriguez family moved to Los Angeles. It was the golden era of Hollywood and the United States was a virgin market when it came to marketing the classical guitar; from the moment he landed in California, Manuel Rodríguez did not stop taking orders.
RETURN TO SPAIN Rodriguez was always aware of the importance of keeping his products’ roots in Spain, to retain its essence. So, in 1973 the Rodriguez family returned to Spain and opened its new shop on Calle Hortaleza in Madrid.
THIRD GENERATION During this new era, the passion for the guitar was born in another member of the family. Manuel Rodriguez Jr., who was only 15 in 1978, decided to devote himself full-time to manufacturing alongside his father.
EUROPEAN TOUR Manuel Rodriguez Jr. decided to continue with the expansion that had started in the United States. The first trade fair they attended was the 1983 World Music Fair in Frankfurt and this experience encouraged him to continue travelling the continent with their guitars.
NEW FACTORY The increase in sales to an international level gave the family sufficient courage to think about leaving the small shop in the centre of Madrid and to centralise all production to its new factory in Esquivias, Toledo.
MORE INSTRUMENTS With the new factory at full performance, the family decided to expand its range of guitars and diversify their products. With the arrival of the new century, Manuel Rodríguez began to produce flamenco cajones and ukuleles.
RECOGNITION Extensive experience, professionalism and tradition have led Manuel Rodríguez to receive an award for its more than 100 years as a main player in the manufacture of guitars at the NAMM International Fair.
We are tradition and modernity, art and experience. We are exotic woods, the smell of sawdust and varnishes. We are passionate about the creation of our guitars; generation after generation we have achieved the perfection of a century-old manufacturing technique. Our creations are proof of our strong commitment to Spanish culture, which has led us to having a presence in more than 120 countries. We create the essence of Spain and bring it to the whole world. We are music, we are culture, we are Guitarras Manuel Rodriguez.
TRADITION AND MODERNITY
Today, our company, whose origins date back more than a hundred years, is the second oldest in the world. However, at Manuel Rodriguez we always stay one step ahead. We were the first to bring the classical guitar to the United States and we were pioneers in the search for solutions to tuning problems thanks to the movable bridge. Our factory in Esquivias, Toledo, is a clear modern-day example. There, we have managed to produce an affordable product which remains fully hand crafted.
ART AND EXPERIENCE
Our guitars, spirit of the most Spanish music, are made with the utmost care and attention by our experienced luthiers, the true stars of Manuel Rodriguez, experts in the manufacture of this instrument that represents the culture of an entire country. They are the people who handle the woods, who shape them with dexterity to then effectively join them together, thereby creating an instrument full of harmony. Our luthiers' maxim is to deliver the best sound in an instrument of infinite beauty.
At Manuel Rodriguez we use the most delicate varnishes and wood from around the world to make our guitars. The whiteness of the spruce, the lightness of the Honduras cedar, the softness of the Indian or Madagascan rosewood, the density of the cypress, the vein of the surprising bubinga and the elegance of the sapele form the straight lines and curves of our instruments. Without a quality raw material, without choosing the best materials we wouldn't be able to obtain that very special sound and unique aesthetic.
